Comments from Birding Guests

I put together a 2-day custom January 2016 birding trip on St. Vincent with Lystra Culzac of SCIENCE (previous co-founder Avian Eyes), the non-profit bird and nature conservation group there. Before St. Vincent, I was birding on St. Lucia and wanted to make sure that I saw the endemic birds of St. Vincent and the other specialties of the Grenadines as well since I was in the general area. It would have been a shame to not go to St. Vincent from St. Lucia since they are so close together.

I was extremely pleased with everything in working together with Lystra (a former Forestry Officer)…..from our communications in setting up the trip, the guide that I had for the two days, the hotel she suggested, the birding, and all aspects of the trip. Lystra and Glenroy (Peewee) were extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the birds and all aspects of bird/nature conservation on the island. In fact, Peewee was the Wildlife Officer on St. Vincent and the Grenadines so I definitely, had the local bird/wildlife expert as my leader.

I have a lot of international birding trip experience and I highly recommend Lystra and the SCIENCE organization!

Ben Olewine

My husband and I recently visited the island of St. Vincent on an independent birding trip. We hired Lystra for one of our days to get the most out of our birding experience. Though our targets were the two island endemics, St. Vincent Parrot and Whistling Warbler, we were also interested in seeing any of the birds that the island hosts. It was clear that Lystra knew exactly where to go, and we were not disappointed, getting great looks at about a dozen or so parrots! But, the Whistling Warbler eluded us, despite Lystra’s best efforts to find one. So, Lystra took us to a different spot where she had had a warbler recently. This was a spot that we never would have found without her guidance, and it paid off with a Whistling Warbler exactly where she thought it would be. It was readily apparent that she was going to do all she could to find this elusive species for us.

We were very happy with our experience with Lystra. She is familiar with the local bird calls and songs. We also appreciated her wealth of knowledge about the island itself – including a great meal recommendation for local food. Wherever we travel in the world, we always hire a local birding guide, not just for their birding expertise, but also to get a sense of the local flavor. Lystra met all of our expectations and we recommend her to anyone traveling to St. Vincent.
